 Zac nem sokkal tizenhatodik születésnapja után, 2008 júniusában vágott neki a 28 ezer mérföldes útnak 36 láb hosszú vitorlásával, és múlt héten csütörtökön délután kötött ki Marina del Rey-ben, ahol szülei és barátai mellett több százan várták. Édesapja háromszor is utána utazott, hogy segítsen megjavítani a hajó sérüléseit. Zac Sunderland az ausztrál David Dicks 1996-ben felállított rekordját döntötte meg, aki 18 évesen vitorlázta körbe a földet. A most hitelesített rekord azonban rövid életűnek is bizonyulhat, mert a néhány hónappal fiatalabb angol Mike Perham már úton van gyorsabb hajójával.
